About Vernon Heroes

In July of 2015, Melissa Gobbett and Lindsay James shaved 9 heads outside of a small salon on main street, in an effort to raise money for Brain Cancer Research. It was a blistering hot, the razor was over-heating and all the hair was sticking to the poor souls having their heads shaved. Nothing went as planned, but with the support of the community still managed to raise $10,000 that year. This was the only event Melissa would make it to. Sadly she passed away from Brain Cancer April 13th of the following year, just a couple months before their 2nd event. Heroes Amazing Race was created in their 2nd year and has doubled in attendance each year. May 26th will be the 3rd annual event and we are expecting approximately 300 in attendance. To Date Heroes has raised $49,000.

This year profits from the race will be donated to The Cancer Clinic Comfort Fund at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. The Comfort Fund is designated by the doctors and counselors at Cancer Clinic to patients expressing a need for financial support while dealing with cancer.

Melissa's Story

Melissa was 29 years old when she was diagnosed with Brain Cancer. Melissa underwent various treatments, brain surgery, radiation and chemo. Melissa fought hard in the battle with Cancer.

Melissa was diagnosed in December 2013, with an oligoastrocytoma, a rare mixed glioma brain tumor discovered in her left temporal lobe.

In January of 2016 Melissa was informed that her cancer was no longer responsive to treatment and was given a diagnosis of 6 months to live. Even though Melissa was dealing with the pain and heartache of her diagnosis she was still so passionate about Heroes Shave it Off, and the possibility that one day brain cancer will no longer be a death threat. In June of 2015 Melissa Gobbett and Lindsay James created this event and raised just over $10,000.00, And fought together as long as they could. Now we fight in her memory and in the hopes that one day brain cancer will no longer be the ending of so many lives.
